Wild Kratts, a popular show for small children that airs on PBS had an episode dedicated to tidepools. She’s not doing it exactly the way the kid taught us, but she looks so darn cute! Paige is humming to a periwinkle in the picture below. It was definitely one of the highlights from our trip to Maine so it seemed fitting to write a blog post about it. We took this trip a few years ago which explains the old pictures. Apparently the vibration during humming helps the periwinkle to emerge from its shell. I know it sounds silly but everyone will be doing it. To do so, hold the periwinkle in the palm of your hand and rest your chin on your hand near your wrist so that you’re eye level with the periwinkle. It may not be necessary, but it worked EVERY single time. I honestly thought he was trying to mess with us and make us look like idiots, but then I saw everyone in his family doing it. An older kid nearby told us about coaxing a periwinkle out of its shell by humming to it. Summer is the best time to see them, and you can identify them by their spiral shell. However, it is not recommended due to tidal changes.Ī common periwinkle is a small saltwater snail that you can easily see in the pools on the North Atlantic coast. West Street intersects Bridge Street, and the gravel bar is accessible from Bridge Street. You may be able to find parking on West Street. Water shoes would be extremely helpful since rocks can get very slippery and are sometimes sharp. We visited during the month of July and found the water to be pretty chilly but refreshing. Bar Island becomes accessible by foot for approximately 1.5 hours on either side of low tide. The second area and where we spent the most time was Bar Island, near Bar Harbor. The first is the “quiet side” of Mount Desert Island off of the Wonderland Trail (located along Route 102A, southeast of Bass Harbor). Our favorite place to tidepool is in Acadia National Park, specifically two locations within the park. It’s basically free, educational, will appeal to children of all ages and allows you to take in the beautiful ocean views. Tidepooling is a perfect family activity. These pools of water become home to crabs, periwinkles, starfish, shrimp, barnacles, and sea urchins among other sea critters. Located in Evans Notch, Rattlesnake Pool will make you do a double take when you see it in person, the water rivals the Caribbean! While the water may be cold, it’s crystal clear and will feel incredibly refreshing to swim around a waterfall hidden in the Blueberry Mountain Area.Curious what little critters like to hang out in the ocean? Heard of tidepooling? Tidepooling is the activity of exploring tidepools, which form at low tide when water retreats along rocky coasts leaving pools of water. While there are certainly no shortage of places to swim in Maine, there’s one little spot that has some of the bluest water in the state. Where can I find the bluest water in Maine? When you’re ready to sink your toes in the sand, pay a visit to Sandy Point Beach, one of the best places to swim in Maine. Instead of the sandy shores most beaches are known for, Jasper Beach is peppered with millions of smooth stones which sound like they’re singing when the waves move them around. Jasper Beach might just be one of the most beautiful beaches in Maine, it’s certainly one of the most unique. There’s nothing better than spending a day on a beach in Maine. If that’s too much of a commitment, there are plenty of short and sweet hikes in Maine that don’t compromise on scenery, like the trail to Moxie Falls, one of Maine’s highest waterfalls. Most people take their own boat, but kayaking is an option too. If you’re up for an adventure, you can explore the 221 acres of Jewell Island, but you’ll have to find your own way to get there since there are no ferry rides to the island. Maine is abundant with hiking trails that showcase the raw beauty of The Pine Tree State.
